Not that this will help with your nail biting problem, but I thought that I would share this little bit of information out of interest if nothing else... Apparently biting your nails makes them grow faster. You don't realize this obviously as the biting seems to ruin the effect...

A Few Things That Will Help

*Short Nail Beds

We are born with the nails that we have, there is nothing you can do about it... to a point. I happen to have short nail beds and the best colors for my nails are soft colors. Lavender makes them look longer, so be sure to stock up on this gorgeous color.

*Removing Polish

First of all, look for an acetone-free polish remover, which by the way, will not dry out your nails. Saturate a cotton pad and then press onto the polished nail.

Wait several seconds and then draw the pad to the tip of the nail. Polish should come off with one stroke. The few seconds we give the polish remover is long enough to dissolve the polish and you are done in half the time.

*Saving The Nails

It is really easy to pick up some bad beauty habits and some of them might be costing you pretty nails. For a day, keep track of how often you use your nails as tools. Chances are you do so more often than you realize. Keep your list in front of you so that you will slowly begin to break the habits. It can be done... but you have to know about them first.

*Is This What Your Nails Are Craving?

If your nails are weak, splitting, fragile etc, the problem could be traced back to an inadequate water intake. Most people don't drink nearly enough. How much water do you really drink over the course of a day?

Brittle nails are simply nails that have dried out to such a degree that they are splitting or simply snapping off.This is a common problem for a lot of women, but if you know what is causing it, you are that much closer to fighting back.

Known Causes

* -contact with harsh household products

* -low grade polish removers

* -metal nail files

* -chlorine from swimming pools

* -shortage of calcium or essential fatty acids

* -products containing formaldehyde

Tips that Can Help

* -Use polish removers no more than once a week. The low grade polishes I mentioned above can be extremely drying and have the strength of paint strippers in some cases.

* They can also remove the microorganisms that are necessary to healthy nails. Look for removers that are oil based.

* -Massage the nails with castor oil. After a month or two, you should notice a difference. Olive oil is another inexpensive way to moisturize dehydrated nails.

* -Give your nails a break from daily use of polishes. Let them breathe as much as possible. Rubbing the surface of the nail with your fingertips can not only stimulate circulation but leave each nail with a healthy glow.

Not that this will help with your nail biting problem, but I thought that I would share this little bit of information out of interest if nothing else... Apparently biting your nails makes them grow faster. You don't realize this obviously as the biting seems to ruin the effect...

A Few Things That Will Help

*Short Nail Beds

We are born with the nails that we have, there is nothing you can do about it... to a point. I happen to have short nail beds and the best colors for my nails are soft colors. Lavender makes them look longer, so be sure to stock up on this gorgeous color.

*Removing Polish

First of all, look for an acetone-free polish remover, which by the way, will not dry out your nails. Saturate a cotton pad and then press onto the polished nail.

Wait several seconds and then draw the pad to the tip of the nail. Polish should come off with one stroke. The few seconds we give the polish remover is long enough to dissolve the polish and you are done in half the time.

*Saving The Nails

It is really easy to pick up some bad beauty habits and some of them might be costing you pretty nails. For a day, keep track of how often you use your nails as tools. Chances are you do so more often than you realize. Keep your list in front of you so that you will slowly begin to break the habits. It can be done... but you have to know about them first.

*Is This What Your Nails Are Craving?

If your nails are weak, splitting, fragile etc, the problem could be traced back to an inadequate water intake. Most people don't drink nearly enough. How much water do you really drink over the course of a day?

8 Color Tips for Nails

Use these tricks to get perfect colored polish for your toes and fingers.

1. Moisturize cuticles. Cuticle oils penetrate the skin bed best. Check out prices here:Compare Prices. Don't have cuticle oil on hand? Use a rich hand cream like Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Hand Cream or even lip balm.

2. Prep nails by filing. File nails in an oval shape just like the curve of your nail base. Square tips could make your fingers look chubby.

3. It's important to wipe nails with a nail polish remover before applying polish even if you aren't wearing polish. Why? Oils left on the nail (like the hand cream or lip balm) will keep polish from sticking.

# But don't clean nails with cotton balls. Why? They'll leave little fuzzies on your nails. A better option is to use a makeup sponge.

# Wrap the tips of your nails with polish. When applying polish, be sure to bring it over the front edge of the nail and slightly under the tip. This helps prevent chipping.

# If the polish chips, it's best to remove the paint from the nail and start over. If you don't have time, dip your finger in nail polish remover and smooth over the chipped area and re-apply a topcoat.

# Smudged your polish while painting? Try this trick: dip your finger in nail polish remover and use it to smooth the surface, repainting with a topcoat.

# The secret to keeping nails from smudging: Dry time! Surfaces will feel dry to the touch after 10 minutes, but don't be fooled. It actually takes an entire hour for nails to completely dry.

# When a nail breaks, the best thing to do is to cut it off. But here's a trick if the break is low down (& painful, undoubtedly): cut a tiny strip of gauze from a teabag, place it over the tear & the paint over with polish.

# To maintain a fresh polish, add a fresh layer of topcoat every other day.

# How long should your manicure last? Experts say one to 2 weeks. A pedicure should last 2 to 4 weeks.

A couple expert tips we've learned over the years:

1. Want to ensure your nails are the right shape? Line each finger up with its opposite, cuticle-to-cuticle.

2. Fingers stained from nicotine, berries or too dark polish? Take a whitening toothpaste

3. Two thin coats are better than one thick coat. You'll find it dries faster.

Things You Shouldn't Be Doing - If You Want Gorgeous Nails.

There are a lot of little things that you could be doing without even thinking about it. And, it could be taking a toll on your nails. Here are some of the things that we all do from time to time.

* Don't wash a dish without slipping into a pair of rubber gloves. Hand models who make their living from their gorgeous hands and nails, wouldn't dream of doing any housework without some sort of gloves to protect their investment.
* You haven't made certain that your nails are dry and free of oil before applying polish.
* You find that your polish is chipped and you can't help yourself from picking at the remaining polish. Not a good idea. You could actually damage the underlying nail.
* Don't let your nails get too long. Not only do they look unattractive... picture talons in your mind...

# they are easier to break.
# Don't use your nails as tools. We do this all the time, and it weakens our nails.
# We go out in public with chipped polish. Nothing looks worse and everyone does notice. Get a repolish
# You don't moisturize your cuticles and it is such an easy thing to do. Get into the habit of moisturizing every night. Who needs hangnails.
# I was told a long time ago never to carry heavy packages. The reason... the weight caused blood to rush to your hands and becoming trapped in the veins, which in time enlarges them. That is not something you want to see when you hit your forties.
# You don't carry an emery board with you at all times. If you find yourself with a snag and you don't have an emery board handy, guess what you are going to use... that's right, your teeth.
# No one likes ridges in their nails, but overbuffing could lead to traumatizing the nail. Instead, massage a good oil into the nail and then a ridge filling base coat. That should take care of the ridges before you apply your polish.
